What are lyme disease symptoms?

Lyme disease is a bacterial illness caused by a bacterium called a “spirochete.” The lyme disease symptoms are variable, usually involving more than one system. The skin, joints and nervous system are affected most often. In later stages, the bacteria disseminate throughout the body and may cross the blood-brain barrier, making the infection more difficult to treat. Late diagnosed Lyme is treated with oral or intravenous antibiotics, frequently ceftriaxone for a minimum of four weeks.
About half the people infected with Lyme disease develop a rash within 1 to 4 weeks.A tick must be attached for at least 24 h to transmit the spirochete. Tick engorgement and attachment for 72 h are predictors of subsequent human infection.
Once diagnosed, Lyme disease can be treated.
